Audra Cohen Named ACC Player of the Year

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – University of Miami sophomore Audra Cohen was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and the Hurricanes placed three players on all the All-ACC team as announced Wednesday by a vote of conference coaches. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Joining Cohen on the All-ACC team were senior Melissa Applebaum and junior Audrey Banada. Miami and Duke each placed three student-athletes on the All-ACC squad.
Cohen becomes the second consecutive Miami player to earn the honor. Former standout Megan Bradley was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2005–Miami’s first year in the conference.
Cohen, a Plantation, Fla. native, is ranked second in the nation with a 25-0 overall record and a 15-0 mark against ranked opponents this season. She helped the Hurricanes to a 17-5 record on the season, including a 9-2 mark in ACC play and a share of first place in the league.
Applebaum paired up with Cohen for an 8-1 doubles record in ACC. The pair, ranked fifth in the nation, is 15-1 overall and enjoyed a 15 match win streak for most of the season. Applebaum, a Coral Gables, Fla. native, posted a 5-4 record in ACC singles play and is 15-12 overall.
Banada earned her second career All-ACC honor. A native of North Miami Beach, Fla., Banada posted a 9-1 singles record in ACC matches and is 25-9 overall, including a 7-0 mark at the No. 5 singles position. Banada has paired up with freshman Monika Dancevic to post a 7-2 record in the ACC. The duo is ranked 43rd in the country with a 12-4 overall mark.
The Hurricanes are set to compete in the 2006 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship which is slated to begin Thursday, April 20 thru Sunday, April 23 at the Cary Tennis Complex in Cary, N.C. No. 3 seeded Miami received a first-round bye and will play the winner of Virginia/Virginia Tech Friday at 3:00 p.m.
