No. 10 Miami Closes Out Regular Season with 6-1 Win over No. 34 NC State

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Hurricanes won five of six singles matches while claiming the doubles point to upend No. 34 NC State in the regular season finale Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Miami’s (17-3, 9-2 ACC) win over the Wolfpack (20-9, 3-8 ACC) places second year head coach Mario Rincon and the Hurricanes in a three-way tie with Duke and Virginia for first place in the final ACC regular season standings.

Led by Eric Hechtman and Josh Cohen’s 8-4 win over NC State’s Nick Cavaday and Jay Weinacker on court No. 3, the Hurricanes took two of three doubles matches, claiming the doubles point to open the afternoon.

In singles, Hechtman cruised past Will Shaw at the No. 5 spot, winning 6-0, 6-2 while 72nd-ranked Cohen defeated Andre Iriarte 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 3, giving UM a 3-0 advantage in the match score.

John Hoyes then clinched the match for the Hurricanes at No. 6, bouncing back from a 6-0 first-set loss to Weinacker to win the second and third sets 7-6 and 6-0 respectively.

Miami’s fifth-ranked Luigi D’Agord outlasted No. 46 Cavaday, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 and teammate Daniel Vallverdu overtook NC State’s Val Banada 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 to earn UM’s fifth and six point of the day.

The Hurricanes will begin preparations for the 2006 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship Tournament, held Thursday, April 20 through Sunday, April 23 at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
