Hurricanes Lose To Florida State, 16-1
April 15, 2006
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami’s early miscues and a late-inning collapse led to a 16-1 loss to No. 2 Florida State in front of 6,407 at Dick Howser Stadium Saturday night. The No. 22 Hurricanes (25-13 overall, 10-7 ACC) tied a season high by hitting into four double plays and let in four runs via walk or wild pitch before yielding 11 runs to the Seminoles (33-5, 13-4 ACC) in the seventh and eighth innings.
Miami starter Manny Miguelez (5-3) was charged with the loss and gave up four earned runs on four hits and a season-high five walks in 2.1 innings. Tyler Chambliss (9-1) gave up four hits and one run in seven innings to pick up the win for FSU.
Jon Jay went 1-for-2 with a walk and scored Miami’s only run. Thirteen Seminoles collected hits and were led by Josh Spivey and Tony Thomas Jr., who drove in three runs apiece.
The Seminoles pushed their lead to 4-0 in the third. Miguelez issued four walks and gave up two hits in the inning. Danny Diaz hit a leadoff double that was followed by Shane Robinson’s infield single. Rye walked to load the bases with no outs. It looked as if Miguelez would work his way out of the jam when Malone followed Dennis Guinn’s pop fly foul to first. But a miscommunication between Jemile Weeks and Yonder Alonso allowed the ball to drop harmlessly to the ground and opened the flood gates.
Miguelez walked Malone, scoring Diaz from third to put FSU up 2-0. A walk to Buster Posey and a wild pitch scored Robinson and Rye before Miguelez issued his third-straight walk to Thomas. Ricky Orta was brought in from the bullpen and recorded the final two outs of the inning that ended with Miami trailing 4-0.
Jay got the Hurricanes’ first hit of the night, a one-out single to right field in the fourth. Chambliss walked Alonso and Danny Valencia to load the bases. A passed ball to Richard O’Brien allowed Jay to score and cut the deficit to 4-1.
FSU got the run back in the fifth when Guinn scored on a wild pitch from third base, pushing the lead to 5-1.
A three-run seventh by the Seminoles put the game out of reach. Josh Spivey and Strauss hit a pair of RBI doubles and Rye singled home another run, all with two outs, to open an 8-1 lead.
Jason Santana took the mound for Miami in the eighth and retired the leadoff man before FSU began its onslaught. FSU pounded-out eight runs on eight hits and were aided in part by a hit batter and two Miami errors. The inning ran the score to 16-1 and left FSU’s hit total at 20.
The 16 runs allowed by Miami was the most since a 17-6 loss to Georgia Tech last season and was the most given up to Florida State since a 17-11 loss in the 2002 season. It was the first time Miami allowed 20 hits in a game for the first time since the 1957 season, also against Florida State.
Notes: Jay was hit by a pitch in the first inning for the 14th time this season, tying him with Jim Burt (2004) for fourth on the single-season list.
