Victories, Regional Qualifiers Abound and Records Fall at Diet Pepsi Invitational

Gainesville, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s track and field team competed at the Diet Pepsi Invitational. The Hurricanes won seven events had an additional three top collegiate finishers and had 12 performances that qualified for the NCAA East Regional.
In the throwing events, Kailtin Nazario won the javelin throw, with a new school record mark of 136-03. Khadija Talley finished second in the discus, breaking her school record in that event with a throw of 180-03. Talley was the top collegiate finisher in that event and qualified for the NCAA East Regional meet. Akera Lathan placed first in the shot put with a throw of 50-01.75 and that mark qualified her for the NCAA East Regional meet.
The jumpers performed well, with Tabia Charles placing first in the triple jump with a jump of 43-03.00. Brenda Faluade finished third in the same event, jumping 42-07.50. In the high jump Viktoria Andonova placed second with a mark of 5-08.75. She was the top collegiate finisher in that event. All three performances qualified for the NCAA East Regional.
The runners performed well during Saturday’s meet. Charlette Greggs won the 200 meter dash in 23.21. Krista Simkins ran a 23.68 in the same event. Both times met the NCAA East Regional standard. Ginou Etienne ran 2:08.28 in the 800-meter to place first in that event. Dominique Darden finshed at the top collegiate finisher in the 100-meter hurdles running 13.37.India Ransom ran a season best 11.55 in the 100-meters to finished seventh in the event. All of those performances qualified for the East Regional Meet.
The relay team of Darden, Simkins, Ransom and Greggs took first place in the 4×100 meter relay, with a season best time of 44.13. In the 4×400 meter relay the team of Etienne, Ena Luefroy, Darden and Greggs won in a time of 3:34.63. Both performances qualified for the Regional Meet.
The Hurricanes compete again next weekend at the Texas Relays from April 6-8 held on the University of Texas campus.
