Hechtman Ties UM Doubles Record as Hurricanes Sweep Eagles
March 24, 2006
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With a victory at No. 2 doubles with Tim Krebs Friday in a 7-0 victory over Boston College, senior Eric Hechtman recorded his 81st career doubles victory, placing him alongside former Hurricane John Eagleton as the University of Miami’s career doubles leader.
Hechtman, whose career doubles record now stands at 81-34, matches the record for total victories set by Eagleton, a former two-time UM All-American who posted an overall record of 81-10 from 1974-77.
The 7-0 victory over the Eagles (5-11, 0-4 ACC) marks second-year head coach Mario Rincon and the Hurricanes’ (11-2, 3-1 ACC) third-consecutive sweep over an opponent.
Hechtman and Krebs knocked off Boston College’s Alex Rastorgouen and Brian Hartness 8-1 at the No. 2 doubles spot to help the Hurricanes clinch the doubles points.
With a straight-set, 6-0, 6-0, victory over Sam Wagner at No. 4 doubles, Hechtman also improved his career singles record to 76-40, pushing him into seventh place all-time at UM.
Also in singles, Luigi D’Agord – ranked No. 7 nationally – downed Soma Kesthely 6-3, 7-6 at the No. 1 spot while Daniel Vallverdu knocked off Jason Sechrist 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2.
At the No. 3 position, Krebs defeated Rastorgouev 6-2, 6-1.
John Hoyes won his seventh-straight singles match, defeating Michael Reiser 6-1, 6-1 and Vivek Subramanin improved his unbeaten streak to 7-0 at the No. 6 position with a 6-3, 6-4 over Dennis Reardon.
Hechtman will attempt to break the UM doubles record Sunday when the Hurricane travel to College Park, Md. to take on Maryland at 12 noon.
