March 14, 2006
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Four Miami pitchers combined to throw a six-hit shutout in a 6-0 win against Fordham in front of 1,177 Tuesday night at Mark Light Field. The win was Miami’s 11th in a row and improved the team’s record to 17-6 overall. Fordham dropped to 3-11.
Jason Santana (1-1) pitched five innings and gave up two hits in his first career start to earn his first career win for Miami. Andrew Lane pitched the final one and one-third innings to earn his first career save. Craig Tscherednikov (0-2) pitched well but was charged with the loss after giving up one run on four hits in five and two-third innings with two strikeouts.
The Hurricane bullpen provided four innings of scoreless relief in support of Santana. Jon McLean pitched two innings and Danny Gil went two-thirds of an inning before giving way to Lane with two outs in the eighth.
Danny Valencia went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Blake Tekotte hit a three-run home run for the Hurricanes. Walter Diaz went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
Brian Keeney led the Rams’ offensive charge, doubling twice.
Valencia drove in the only run Miami would need in the fourth inning, using his fifth double of the season to score Diaz from third base for the 1-0 lead.
The Hurricanes took advantage of a misplayed rundown in the seventh inning to add to their lead. Richard O’Brien held at second while Roger Tomas tried to stretch a two-out single into a double. Tomas was caught in rundown at first, but both runners advanced a base when Fordham first baseman Bobby DiNardo dropped the ball in the rundown. Tekotte made the Rams pay with his second home run of the season off Cory Riordan to provide a 4-0 cushion.
Jon Jay was hit by a pitch to lead off the Miami eighth and stole second and third before scoring on a Valencia single for a 5-0 lead. Tommy Giles was hit by a pitch and Jemile Weeks walked to load the bases with one out. O’Brien singled off Chris Kaible to score Valencia for Miami’s sixth and final run.
Miami will play its final non-conference game until May when it takes on Manhattan College at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Mark Light Field.
Notes: Jay was hit by a pitch for the 10th time this season and 25th time in his career, moving him into a tie for sixth place on UM’s all-time list with Kevin Brown (1998-2001) … it was Miami’s third shutout of the season.
