Hurricanes Open Spring Practice
March 6, 2006
CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The University of Miami volleyball team will open spring play with a scrimmage against Miami-DadeCollege Friday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the Knight Sports Complex. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The team, which began individual practices on Jan. 23 and team practice on Feb. 22, will practice five days a week during the six-week spring training period. Practices will consist of lifting weights three days a week, conditioning two days a week and full practice sessions everyday.
“Both the team and the staff really enjoy our spring training,” said head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “It is a great time of year for us to focus on our fundamentals, and getting rep after rep until we get things right. It allows us to take the time we need to really learn and progress individually, and then we put it together as a team.”
The Hurricanes return nine letterwinners and all but one starter from the 2005 squad that finished 16-14 overall and 11-11 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
“Most of our biggest improvements have all happened in spring training and we are excited to see more of our players take this opportunity to take their game to a new level,” continued Lantagne Welch. “There will be a lot of competition for a few positions and that helps us to make sure we are all taking advantage of every day we get to be in the gym. We’ve had a great start so far and look forward to the remaining five weeks and four competitions.”
The Hurricanes will also play in three tournaments, including one at home. Miami will first head to the University of Florida on Saturday, March 25 where it will face squads from Florida, who reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, and Barry.
On Saturday, April 8th, the Hurricanes will welcome North Florida, Barry and Florida Atlantic to the Knight Sports Complex for their only spring tournament at home.
The Hurricanes will conclude spring action on April, 15th when they travel to Central Florida. There, Miami will join teams from USF, Tampa, Georgia, Stetson, UNF and UCF.
