Hurricanes Topple Visiting Wildcats, 5-2

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The 15th Hurricanes swept doubles and won four-of-six singles matches to claim a 5-2 victory over No. 30 Kentucky in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter. With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 5-3 overall while Kentucky falls to 6-5 on the season.

The match opened with the Hurricanes sweeping doubles for the fourth time in as many matches. UM’s 22nd ranked Audra Cohen/Melissa Applebaum pair topped Kentucky’s Kim Coventry/Carolina Escamilla duo, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles before Audrey Banada and Ana Rupic clinched the point with an 8-3 victory over the Wildcat’s Joelle Schwenk/Lara Maurer pair at the No. 2 slot. Caren Seenauth and Patricia Starzyk completed the doubles sweep by outlasting Danielle Petrisko and Caroline Winebrenner, 8-7, at the No. 3 spot.
Cohen, ranked 13th in the nation, notched the first singles victory of the match–a 6-1, 6-0 win over No. 22 Coventry at the No.1 position. The win extends Cohen’s unbeaten streak to 11.
Seenauth gave Miami a 3-0 match lead when she downed Petrisko, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 5 slot.
Starzyk clinched the win for the Hurricanes at the No. 4 position with a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set victory over Escamilla before Rupic topped Jessica Giuggioli 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 slot.
The Hurricanes return to action Sunday, Feb. 26 when they travel to face No. 3 Texas (5-4). Competition begins at 2:00 p.m. EST.
