Winthrop scored seven combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings to overcome a 3-1 deficit and even its season record at 1-1.

Jason Santana was charged with the loss for Miami, and gave up two runs in the sixth on one hit. Ryan Schwartz pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings for Winthrop for the win. UM starter Manny Miguelez pitched five-plus innings and gave seven hits and three earned runs with no walks and five strikeouts.

Miami held a 3-1 advantage heading into the sixth inning, scoring one run in the first on a Winthrop error and two runs in the third on Valencia’s single and a two-out double from designated hitter Gus Menendez.

Winthrop retook the lead with a three-run sixth. Dempsey tied the game with a two-run shot to right-center off Miguelez. Santana spelled Miguelez and retired two Eagles before giving up a two-out pinch-hit RBI single to Jake Shaffer that scored Tommy Lentz from third to give Winthrop a 4-3 lead. Lefty Andrew Lane was brought in from the bullpen with the bases loaded and hit Heath Rollins on his first pitch to bring in Ben Ehrlich from third. Konstanty gave Winthrop an 8-3 seventh-inning lead with a one-out three-run home run to center off Lane.

Carrera took Miguelez deep to left on a 2-1 pitch to leadoff the game and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. UM’s Blake Tekotte tied the game at 1-1 in the first, scoring on an error with two outs on Valencia’s grounder to third.

Eagle starter Chase Edwards left the game with one out the second after walking the bases full with one out in favor of reliever Ben Hildreth.

Notes: Sunday’s first game was officially Miami’s 2,900th in program history… The 10:04 a.m. first pitch of the front end of the doubleheader was the earliest start to a UM game at Mark Light Field since May 26, 1985, when Miami resumed a game against Virginia in the NCAA Regional… Carrera’s first-inning home run was the first run given up by Miguelez this season and it was the first leadoff home run against the Hurricanes since March 1, 2005, against Northeastern…
