CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After sweeping all three doubles matches, Miami could not fend off No. 1 Florida in singles, dropping five-of-six matches to fall 5-2 to the in-state rivals Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Senior Tim Krebs claimed UM’s (2-1) lone singles victory on the No. 4 court, bouncing back from a 6-4 first-set loss to the Gators’ (4-0) Janne Holmia to win the second and third sets 6-2, 6-1, respectively.
Miami opened the afternoon in impressive fashion, taking all three doubles matches from the Gators. On the No. 1 court, UM’s Luigi D’Agord and Danny Vallverdu downed Vladimir Obradovic and Ryan Sweeting 8-5, at the No. 2 spot, Krebs and Vivek Subramanian defeated Holmia and Greg Ouellette 8-6 and Josh Cohen and Eric Hechtman upended Nestor Briceno and Stefan Tell 9-8 (5) at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Florida rebounded as 90th-ranked Obradovic defeated 87th-ranked Cohen 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot to even the match score at 1-1. The court No. 1 match finished next as UF’s Sweeting knocked off 25th-ranked D’Agord 7-5, 6-2.
On the No. 2 court, Vallverdu took the first set 6-2 but could not hang on to fall 6-3, 6-2 in the second and third sets, respectively, to the Gator’s Ouellette, giving UF a 3-1 overall advantage.
Florida’s Briceno then clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Hechtman at No. 5. The Gators’ final point came at No. 6 with a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win by Chris Brandi over UM’s John Hoyes.
