Seventh Seeded Hurricanes Face Badgers at USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team will face tournament host Wisconsin as the No. 7 seed at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Hurricanes (1-0, 0-0 ACC) will square-off with the Badgers (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) at 10:00 a.m. (EST) Thursday, Feb. 2 at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Collegiate Tennis’ premiere indoor team tournament will run from Feb. 2-5 with the championship scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 5th. The indoor tournament fields 16 of the nation’s top teams and will serve as a preview of the teams to beat in May.

 

The Atlantic Coast Conference placed four schools in the tournament, the most out of any of the seven conferences represented. Miami will be joined by conference foes No.14 Duke, No.11 North Carolina and No.4 Georgia Tech.

 

Other schools participating in the event are: No. 9 Baylor, No. 21 BYU, (17) California, No.7 Georgia, No.18 Harvard, No.13 Kentucky, No.6 Northwestern, No.1 Stanford, TCU, No.3 Texas, No.8 Vanderbilt and tournament host No. 34 Wisconsin.

 

Miami has posted a 7-8 record in six appearances at the event. The Hurricanes had their best showing in 1988 when they reached the semifinals. Last season, Miami upset then No. 4 UCLA to open the tournament before falling to Duke and Washington. 

 

Scouting the Badgers:

34th ranked Wisconsin (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) opened the season by winning its home opener against North Illinois 7-0 before falling to No. 54 Western Michigan 5-2 last weekend. No. 32 Caitlin Burke leads the Badgers with an 11-3 overall record.

 

Wisconsin has served as host of the event since the tournament’s inception in 1988. In 18 appearances, the Badgers have posted a 10-41 record.

 

The Hurricanes hold an 8-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Badgers. In the last meeting between the two programs, Miami defeated then No. 29 Wisconsin 5-4 on Feb. 19, 1999.
