Hurricanes Host Owls in Home Opener

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team will host in-state rival Florida Atlantic in its home opener Friday, Jan. 27 at noon in the NeilSchiffTennisCenter.

The Hurricanes will play their first dual-match after opening the season at the FIU Spring Classic Jan. 13-15. Miami faced players from No. 30 FIU as well as No. 45 USF and No. 53 Illinois in the three-day hidden dual tournament. No team scores were allotted during the event and results only counted for individual records. 

 

Sophomore transfer Audra Cohen made her debut in a Miami uniform by going undefeated in three matches during the FIU Spring Classic. She defeated all her opponents in straight sets.

 

Senior Melissa Applebaum went undefeated in three doubles matches during the tournament. She paired up with freshman Monika Dancevic for one match and sophomore Patricia Starzyk for the remaining two.

 

The Owls open their season on Friday and are led by newly appointed head coach Mary Dailey. Dailey played with the Hurricanes from 1982 to 1984 garnering All-American honors in 1983 after reaching the quarterfinals in the NCAA Doubles Championship.
