Hurricanes Top Golden Panthers in Dual Meet

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The University of Miami swimming and diving team won nine out of 13 events to top cross-town rival FloridaInternationalUniversity, 139-97, Saturday afternoon at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.

The Hurricanes picked up their first win of the season to improve their record to 1-4, 0-3 ACC. The Golden Panthers fell to 1-6 overall.
Miami opened the meet with a win in the 200-medley relay. The relay team of junior Ashley Knapp, freshman Magda Waszkiewicz, sophomore Emerson Davis and freshman Christine Zwiegers clocked in a time of 1:49.96 to finish first.
Junior Tara Erwin was one of two Hurricanes to win two events during the day. Erwin claimed both the 1000 and 500-freestyle in times of 10:41.80 and 5:17.21, respectively.
Sophomore diver Jenna Dreyer also won two events, claiming both the 1 and 3 meter boards with NCAA Zone qualifying marks. In a close 1-meter competition, Dreyer turned in a score of 277.95 while FIU’s Megan Balkenbush tallied a total 277.88 points to come in second. In the 3-meter, Dreyer scored a 306.53. Freshman Tess Waresmith finished third and qualified for the NCAA Zone meet in both events.
Zwiegers turned in a season best time of 1:54.54 in the 200-freestyle to finish first. Miami finished in the top four in the event with sophomore Capria DeVenuto coming in second followed by Davis in third and freshman Margaret Ravenna in fourth.
Junior Kristen Lunak clocked in a first place time of 4:39.46 in the 400-individual medley. She also turned in a career-best time of 1:00.79 in the 100-butterfly where she came in second.
The Hurricanes swept the 100-backstroke event with Knapp touching the wall first in a team-best time of 58.28. Zwiegers finished second in a time of 59.80 followed by Ravenna in third in time of 1:00. 02–both were season-best times.
Waszkiewicz, who joined the Hurricanes in January, out-touched teammate Melinda Hochard to win the 100-breastroke in a time of 1:08.05. Hochard touched the wall in 1:08.12.
The Hurricanes return to action next Saturday, January 28 when they host New Orleans, Tampa and Florida Atlantic in a quad-meet. Competition at the Norman Student Union Pool begins at 11:00 a.m.
