Hurricanes Compete at the Florida Intercollegiate Open

Gainesville, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami Women’s and Men’s Track and Field team competed in the Florida Intercollegiate Open. Hurricane athletes brought home four victories on the women’s side, one on the men’s side and three women posted NCAA provisional marks.

The Hurricanes took the top two spots in the women’s shot put as junior Akera Lathan’s second throw of 15.27 meters was enough for the victory. Sophomore Khadija Talley third throw of 14.98 meters placed her solidly into second place. Lathan also placed third in the 20-pound weight throw (18.62 meters).

Junior Tabia Charles took the top spot in the triple jump, posting a mark of 13.08 meters on her fourth attempt. That effort gives her a NCAA provisional mark. Junior Amy Seward’s jump 6.00 meters on her first jump, which placed her second in the long jump.

For the runners, senior Charlette Greggs won the 200 meter dash in 23.94, which earned her a NCAA provisional standard. The 4×400-meter team of senior Dominique Darden, junior Ginou Etienne, junior Danielle Bailey and freshman Cori Carr took first place in 3:41.47.

Freshman Pavi’Elle James was the top collegiate finisher in the 55 hurdlers posting a time of 7.82 which is an NCAA provisional mark. She finished second overall in the event. Senior Melanie Schultz was the top collegiate finisher in the mile, third overall, finishing in 4:54.74.

On the men’s side, sophomore Tim Harris won the 800-meter run in 1:50.67. Darnell Johnson jumped a personal best 14.77 meters to qualify him for the 19&U Junior National Championships. Roland DaSilva posted a 7.78 mark in the 55 meter hurdles as the second collegiate finisher and the 4×400 meter relay team of Harris, Dasilva, Joseph Drexler-Dries, and Patrick O’Donnell finished in 3:20.31, just .23 behind Florida State’s winning team.

The Hurricanes return to action at the Penn State National Invite, January 27-28, in University Park, Pa.
