Track and Field Opens Season in Gainesville January 15

Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami Women’s and Men’s Track and Field teams begin their season on January 15 at the Florida Intercollegiate Open. The meet will be held at the Stephen O’Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla. Field events start at 11:00 am, while the running events begin at 10:30 am.

The 2006 edition of the Hurricanes returns seven All-Americans who compete in a variety of events. This stellar group is led by 10-time honored, senior Dominique Darden and 9-time honored senior Charlette Greggs.

Darden finished 6th in the 60-meter hurdles in the NCAA Indoor Championships and was the ACC Indoor 200-meter champion and part of the ACC Indoor 4×400-meter relay championship team. Darden is also the ACC Outdoor record holder in the 400-meter hurdles.

Greggs is the defending 400-meter ACC Indoor champion as was also part of the ACC Indoor 4×400-meter relay championship team. She is also the defending 200-meter NCAA East Regional champion.

From the jumpers, All-Americans junior Tabia Charles, and junior Brenda Faluade return to action this season. Charles was 2005 ACC Indoor champion in the long jump, and Faluade placed ninth at the NCAA Indoor championships.

The throwers lose NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Champion Kim Barrett, but return sophomore Khadija Talley. Talley is the University of Miami record holder in the discus.

The distance runners are led by senior Melanie Schultz, who is the greatest distance runner in school history. Schultz is the school record holder in the 1500-meter and the 5000-meters and was the first woman to ever qualify for NCAA Regional Competition in a distance event.

The men’s side returns sophomore Tim Harris, who was an All-ACC runner in the 800-meters, placing second at the Indoor championships. Competing from the football team this season are sophomores Lance Leggett, Andrew Johnson, freshman Khalil Jones and junior Darnell Jenkins. Junior Tavares Gooden will also be competing in the throws this season.
