Hurricanes Invited to USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The University of Miami women’s tennis team received its second invitation in as many years to play in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships that will take place Feb. 2-5 and will feature 16 of the nations top collegiate women’s teams. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The tournament, which is sponsored by the United States Tennis Association, will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin in Madison at the Badger’s A. C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Wisconsin has served as host of the event since the tournament’s inception in 1988.
The Atlantic Coast Conference placed four schools in the tournament, the most out of any seven conferences represented. Miami will be joined by conference foes Duke, North Carolina and Georgia Tech.
Other schools participating in the event are: Baylor, BYU, California, Georgia, Harvard, Kentucky, Northwestern, Stanford, TCU, Texas, Vanderbilt and tournament host Wisconsin.
Each team is guaranteed three matches, with one match played per day. Finals are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 6.
Miami has posted a 7-8 record in six appearances at collegiate tennis’ premiere indoor team tournament. The Hurricanes had their best showing in 1988 when they reached the semifinals. Last season, Miami upset then No. 4 UCLA to open the tournament before falling to Duke and Washington.
Before heading to Madison, the Hurricanes will open the season at the FIU Spring Invitational from Jan. 13-15.
