Johnson, Savage Selected to AVCA All-Region Team

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Colorado Spring, Colo. – University of Miami senior Karla Johnson and redshirt junior Francheska Savage were selected to the 2005 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I All-East Region team, it was announced Wednesday. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

This marks the first All-Region selection for both players and only the fifth in Miami volleyball’s five year history.

 

The AVCA selects eight 12-player teams as well as six honorable mentions for each region. All but one player on the 12-member East Region team hail from the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC also placed four players on the honorable mention list. Duke led all schools in the East Region with three selections. Miami and Maryland placed two players while North Carolina, Florida State, Virginia and Georgia Tech had one selection each. Clemson’s Jeannette Abbott was tabbed the East Region Freshman of the Year.  

 

Johnson, who was recently named to the All-ACC First Team, finished the season ranked first in the ACC and 13th in the nation with 5.09 kills per game. The outside hitter out of Houston, Texas capped her career at Miami by becoming UM’s all-time leader in career kills with 1,484. Johnson, who was a Preseason All-ACC Selection, was also named to the Hurricane Invitational and Orange & Green Challenge All-Tournament teams.

 

Savage, who was selected to the All-ACC Second Team, finished the season ranked seventh in the ACC in both hitting percentage (.307) and kills per game (3.99). The middle blocker out of Ft. Myers, Fla. was named ACC Player of the Week on Oct. 17th and was also named to the Hurricane Invitational All-Tournament team.

 

Both players are now eligible to receive AVCA All-American honors that will be announced on December 14th.
