Starks, Rinaldi Finish Third at Ohio State Invite

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>COLUMBUS, Ohio –University of Miami junior diver Derek Starks and senior diver Melanie Rinaldi finished third in their respective events on the first day of action at the Ohio State Invitational Friday evening in the Buckeye’s Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Starks finished in third place on the 1-meter board with an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 317.50. ArizonaState’s Joona Puhakka came in first with a score of 417.80 followed by PennState’s Adam Pierce whose score of 360.45 placed him second.
Rinaldi, a senior, scored a 307.55 on the 3-meter to come in third. Purdue’s Carrie McCambridge’s score of 339.15 placed her first. Nancy Underwood of Iowa finished in second with a score of 331.05.
Miami junior Heather Bounds came in fifth on the 3-meter with a score of 296.50 while freshman Tess Waresmith tallied a score of 277.80.
12 schools are taking part in the diving competition including Arizona State, Bowling Green, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kenyon, Michigan State, Minnesota, OhioState, PennState and Purdue.
Action will resume Saturday with preliminaries for the men’s 3-meter and women’s 1-meter at 1:00 p.m. followed by finals at 7:00 p.m.
