Hurricanes Finish Strong at UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team claimed four-of-six singles matches and swept doubles in the final day of competition at the UNC-Kitty Harrison Invitational Sunday afternoon at North Carolina’s Cone-KenfieldTennisCenter. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

The Hurricanes opened the day with doubles matches against Minnesota where senior Melissa Applebaum paired up with Audrey Banada to defeat Marianna Spilca and Ida Malmberg, 8-2.

 

Junior Ana Rupic and Patricia Starzyk also joined forces to down Danielle Mousseau and Nischella Reddy, 8-6.

 

Junior Emily Mowery and sophomore Caren Seenauth dropped only one set en route to an 8-1 victory over Minnesota’s Jenna Tellefsen/Megan Steiger pair.

 

Miami picked up four singles victories in matches against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Duke.

 

Banada claimed a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory over Tara Iyer as Starzyk, ranked No. 106, defeated Jenny Zika, 7-6, 6-3. No. 98 Applebaum outlasted Melissa Mang, 6-1, 4-6 (10-7) while Seenauth downed Parker Goyer, 6-4, 6-3.

 

The Hurricanes return to action next weekend when they host the Hurricane Fall Invitational, Nov. 11-13 at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter.
