Hurricanes Fall to FAU in Season Opener

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team fell to in-state rival Florida Atlantic, 160-129, in its season opener Saturday afternoon at the FAU pool. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

The Hurricanes (0-1) took first and second in both the one and three meter diving events. Sophomore Jenna Dreyer placed first on the one-meter with a score 309.43 while senior Melanie Rinaldi finished in second with a score of 272.86. Dreyer once again finished on top in the three meter with a score of 244.95. Junior Heather Bounds took second with a score of 229.58.

 

Junior Ashley Knapp and freshman Christine Zwiegers were the only other Hurricanes to record first place finishes.

 

Knapp took the top spot in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:06.92. She also finished in second in the 100-backstroke with a time of 58.84.

 

Zwiegers won the 50-freestyle with a time of 24.59 before taking second in the 100-butterfly with a time of 57.75.

 

Junior Tara Erwin came in second in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 10:21.25 before redshirt-freshman Melinda Hochard made her collegiate debut with a third place finish in the 100-breastroke in a time of 1:09.05.

 

In the 200-butterfly, junior Nancy Gajos placed second in a time of 2:08.33 as sophomore Capria DeVenuto touched in third with a time of 2:11.30.  

 

The Hurricanes return to action next Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. dual-meet against cross-town rival Florida International.
