Cohen Advances at ITA Southeast Regionals

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Junior Josh Cohen of the University of Miami men’s tennis team advanced to the round of 32 with a win Friday in the round of 64 at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Memphis.
Cohen, one of five players representing UM, downed Alabama’s Dan Buikema, 6-0, 6-2, in the round of 64 following a first round bye as the tournament’s No. 3 seed.
Cohen will return Saturday for the round of 32 beginning at 9 a.m.
A day after making through the tournament’s qualifying draw, senior John Hoyes and sophomore Vivek Subramanian fell in Friday’s first round with Hoyes dropping a 7-5, 6-1 decision to Tennessee’s David Baxendine and Subramanian falling to Southeast Louisana’s Ondrej Krivka, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Following first round byes, senior Eric Hechtman came up short against Memphis’ Michael Jetter, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, while senior Tim Krebs fell to Florida’s Stefan Tell, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
In the doubles draw, Krebs and junior P.J. Passalacqua fell 8-6 in the first round to Nicholls State’s Sebastien Normand and Vlad Popa.
The duo of Hoyes and Subramanian along with Cohen and Hechtman will pick up doubles play tomorrow.
