FAU

Head Coach Kevin Cooney:
“It was a game between two very similar clubs and you couldn’t have a more even game. It was another great performance by Mickey Storey, who made third-team All-American yesterday. He went out and pitched like one today. It was just what we needed. We really struggled trying to swing the bats again. Tyler (Stevens) came off the bench and gave us a great at bat with the base hit, and he got us another base hit for the extra run, which was really key.”

(on leaving Storey in the game)
“That’s a tough situation for a coach. Mickey had gotten us where we were. As on old starting pitcher, you want to try to finish the game. I just felt that Mickey earned the right with the season he’s had, seven saves and 10 wins now. That was a coaching decision made with my heart as much as anything.”

CF Mike McBryde

“It was good to get the game-winner, but for a while there I thought I wouldn’t get a hit after everybody told me I was one hit away from a record. Everybody said I was jinxed. It seemed like nothing was falling for me, so it was great to get that last one.”

P Mickey Storey

“I just wanted it. You have to have a lot of heart to go and struggle and play through it and come out on top. I wanted it real bad. I didn’t realize I was going against the two best hitters on their team. I’m not one of the most thinking pitchers. I just go out there and try to make good pitches to every hitter and throw strikes.”

VCU

Head Coach Paul Keyes

“I thought it was a great game to be honest with you. It came down to their snagging their line drive and us almost catching their line drive. I thought that was the difference in the game. John [Leonard] threw great all game long. Then Brett [Walker] came in and couldn’t locate very well today and they got a couple of hits.”

“It was a great experience for our guys. You don’t want to go through that, you want to go out with a win. We thought we were a good enough club to beat Florida Atlantic. They’ve got a great club and [Mikey] Storey was outstanding. We worked as hard as we good against him but he was really good.”

Right fielder Trai Harris:
“[Mikey Storey] obviously threw a great game. So once I did get on base, I knew that I had to be aggressive because our hits were few and far between. I knew that if I could get in scoring position, it would be great for us. Unfortunately, I got into a double play late in the game that kind of took some wind out of our sails. I think that was a big play for them.”

Pitcher John Leonard:
On whether he got tired:
“I couldn’t throw my breaking ball for a strike. My fast ball felt good throughout the game and I was throwing my changeup more towards the later innings and I felt fine”
