VCU

Head Coach Paul Keyes:
“We were trying to lull them to sleep in the beginning. Anytime you are a No. 4 seed coming to play against a great tradition like Miami has, you don’t have a lot of margin for error. I thought the first ball hit was a tough play but if we are going to win a game like that, we are going to have to make that play. Anytime we tried to get out of an inning, the would get that one extra run.”

“I thought our guys battle through. I was really proud of them. It was one of those games where you are down 4-0 and it could go down south on you. So I thought it was a good confidence builder.”

On Miami catcher Eddie Rodriguez:
“I thought their catcher was outstanding. He’s really the best catcher that we’ve seen all year. He was blocking the ball really well. We wanted to run but we didn’t want to run because he’s that good. I thought he was the player of the game.”

Pitcher Harold Mozingo:
On the pitch to Ryan Braun:
“It was a fast ball low and in. It seemed like he was just sitting on it.”

Joe Meador:
On Miami pitcher Rickey Orta:
“He was spiking the slider a lot. I was really trying to lay off that. A couple of guys got a little anxious on their front foot, swinging at bad pitches. I was just really trying to lay off, making him pitch to me. I wasn’t going to let him beat me with bad pitches.”

MIAMI

Head Coach Jim Morris:
“First of all it’s nice to get a win. It seems like a long, long time since we won a game. We’re not used to that as a team. It was great to get the win.”

“When you are not winning, you have to do things to get guys hot. You try to bunt, hit and run, steal, you have to do anything to make things happen and we did as much as we could tonight.”

ON Ricky Orta:
“He really pitched well tonight. We’re not sure of our rotation, 2-3-4, and tonight he went out and answered the question of whether he could go out and do it in a big situation. He pitched ahead of hitters and that’s what you need to do to win.”

ON PLAYING MISS STATE:
“The winner of that game is definitely in the driver’s seat and that’s where you want to be. And there is no one I’d rather have pitching then Cesar Carrillo in a big game.”

Winning Pitcher Ricky Orta:
“I was able to stay ahead of hitters and my team helped me out by getting some runs early and get the stress off my back. I had the cutter working tonight and got a lot hitters to ground out.”

3B Ryan Braun:
“Obviously is great to get a win. It gives a lot of momentum going into tomorrow against a quality opponent.”

CF Danny Figueroa:
“The win definitely give us a lot of confidence. It’s a new season for us, we just forgot about the past and played like we normally played. Ricky Orta gave us a great outing like we expect from him.”
