The fourth-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team begins its quest for its first national title at the NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championships, May 27-28, at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, N.Y.
The Hurricanes will have 14 student-athletes competing in 11 individual events and two relays. Miami’s deep and talented group is highlighted by senior Kim Barrett (Miami Gulliver Prep) who enters the NCAA Regional having won eight consecutive shot put events.
Earlier this season, Barrett became the fourth Hurricane to win an NCAA individual national title when she won the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
In addition to the shot put, Barrett will also compete in the hammer throw where she has the third best mark in the region this season.
Miami corps of jumpers is arguably the best in the nation. Four Hurricanes have qualified in the long jump including sophomore All-American Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas), senior All-American Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.), sophomore Amy Seward (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore All-American Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario).
Charles, Faluade and Seward have also qualified in the triple jump. Charles, a five-time All-American, is one of the favorites to win the triple jump having posted the seventh best mark in the nation and the second best in the East Region this season.
Leading Miami’s sprinters will be junior Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) who has the third best time in the nation in the 200-meters. Greggs, the ACC Outdoor Champion at 200-meters and 400-meters, is also in the relay pool for both the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays.
Miami is especially deep in the 400-meters with three women competing in the open event. Sophomore All-American Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) enters the regional with the fifth best time in the nation this season, while senior All-American Wiande Moore (Spring, Texas) has the nation’s sixth fastest time. All-American freshman Lauren Austin (Oviedo, Fla.) will also be competing.
Junior Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.), a seven-time All-American and 2005 ACC Champion, is one of the favorites to win the 400-meter hurdles having posted the fourth fastest time in the nation and the second best in the East region this season.
Other Hurricanes competing this weekend include junior All-American India Ransom (Largo, Md.) in the 100-meters, junior Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) in the 5000-meters, senior Adrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) in the shot put, and freshman Khadija Talley (Benning, Ga.) in the discus.
