May 23, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Miami baseball team was represented well on the eve of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournamet at the ACC Baseball Banquet, held on the banks of the St. Johns River Monday evening. Junior third baseman Ryan Braun was named the ACC Player of the Year and junior pitcher Cesar Carrillo was voted ACC Pitcher of the Year. Sophomore left fielder Jon Jay joined Braun and Carrillo on the All-ACC first team, while senior right fielder Paco Figueroa was named to the second team.
The head coaches of all 11 ACC schools voted on the awards.
Braun batted .412 with 16 home runs and led the ACC with 71 RBIs, a .747 slugging percentage, 145 total bases and 68 runs scored.
“This is a tremendous honor and privilege to be voted as the top player in what I think is the best baseball conference in the country,” Braun said. “I think it’s a tribute to my teammates and my consistency. My success has come as a result of their success.”
Carrillo led the ACC with a 12-1 record this season with a 2.27 ERA and 106 strikeouts against 18 walks in 103 innings pitched. The Chicago, Ill. native won 24 consecutive decisions to start his career to rank fourth on the NCAA’s Division I all-time consecutive decisions won list before losing for the first time last Thursday at Clemson.
“This award could have gone to a lot of other great pitchers in this conference,” Carrillo said. “It feels good to win this award in Miami’s first year in the ACC and I have to thank my teammates for helping me get it,” Carrillo said.
Jay was second in the ACC with a .435 average, .520 on-base percentage and led the Hurricanes with 16 doubles to go along with 50 RBIs. Figueroa had a career year, batting .371 with 12 doubles, four home runs, 34 RBIs and a conference-leading five triples.
