CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Danny Valencia’s solo home run proved to be enough offense for the third-ranked Hurricanes, thanks to the combined efforts of Miami pitchers Dan Touchet, Andrew Lane and Chris Perez in a 1-0 win against Virginia Saturday night at Davenport Field.

Valencia broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, putting a 2-2 pitch from over the fence in left field for his fifth home run of the season and the game’s only run.

The Hurricane pitchers held Virginia to seven hits and no runs despite allowing a base runner in eight of the nine innings.

Touchet had his best game of the season, holding the Cavaliers scoreless in six innings of work with four strikeouts and two walks, starting in place of Brandon Camardese, who missed the game due to illness. Touchet moved to 3-3 with the win.

Lane pitched one inning of setup relief in the seventh before giving way to Perez, who struck out five in the eighth and ninth innings to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Jeff Kamrath was impressive for the Cavaliers, giving up only six hits with one walk and six strikeouts in eight and one-third innings.

Sean Doolittle relieved Kamrath after he walked Ryan Braun with one out in the ninth. Doolittle gave up a single to Valencia and walked Walter Diaz to load the bases before striking out Eddy Rodriguez to end the inning.

Ryan Braun went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, and Valencia was 3-for-4.

UM and UVa conclude their series Sunday at noon at Davenport Field.

Notes: The game was delayed one hour due to lightning and rain showers and began at 8:07 p.m.
