May 6, 2005
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Cesar Carrillo just keeps rolling for the fourth-ranked Hurricanes. Miami’s junior ace moved his record to 11-0 with his second complete game of the season in a 4-2 win against Jacksonville Friday night in front of 2,406 at Mark Light Field. Miami improved to 34-11-1 and the Jacksonville dropped to 21-27 with the loss.
Carrillo gave up five hits and one earned run and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and no walks. The win pushed Carrillo into a tie for fourth place on the NCAA’s all-time list for consecutive decisions won without a loss at 23-0 for his career. Dolphin starter Donald Brickle pitched six innings and gave up nine hits and four earned runs with one strikeout and dropped to 2-5 with the loss.
The guy Carrillo was throwing to all night wasn’t too shabby either. Hurricane catcher Eddy Rodriguez went 3-for-3 with a home run, double and two runs scored. Jon Jay went 3-for-4 with a run batted in and freshman Danny Robitaille went 1-for-3 with a game-winning RBI.
Miami did most of its damage early, with four straight singles to start the game, the last of which was hit by Jay to score Danny Figueroa from third. Danny Valencia followed with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Paco Figueroa for a 2-0 lead. JU got out of the jam by turning a 2-3-2 double play on Roger Tomas’ bunt, retiring Tomas at first and tagging out Ryan Braun at the plate.
Jacksonville tied the game in the second on Logan James’ infield single that scored Preston Pehrson from third and a fielder’s choice that drove in Doug Fowler.
Rodriguez led off the Hurricane fifth with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on Alex Garabedian’s ground out to first. Robitaille lined a single to right to score Rodriguez for what proved to be the game’s winning run and the Hurricanes grabbed a 3-2 lead.
Rodriguez provided the Hurricanes with some breathing room with his fifth home run of the year, a solo shot deep to left field to lead off the seventh and give the Hurricanes a 4-2 advantage.
Carrillo retired the last 10 batters he faced and struck out Thomas LePage to end the game.
Miami and Jacksonville continue their series with a 7 p.m. tilt Saturday at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes seniors will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
Notes: It was the 2,000th game the Hurricanes had played on their home field (not just at Mark Light Field)… UM no. 1-ranked women’s tennis player Megan Bradley and former Hurricane cornerback and Arizona Cardinal first-round draft pick were honored before the game as Miami’s ACC Scholar-Athletes of the Year, and both threw out a ceremonial first pitch… Walter Diaz was held out of the starting lineup due to illness prior to the game… Carrillo’s sixth strikeout of the game ended the sixth inning and was the 92nd of the season, establishing a career high… The Hurricanes are 33-0 all-time when Carrillo pitches.
