Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s golf team received an at-large bid to the 2005 NCAA East Regional Women’s Golf Championship, and will be the 14th-seed, May 5-7, at the University of Florida Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
The NCAA berth is the second in as many seasons for the Hurricanes, and the 17th in 22 seasons under Hall of Fame head coach Lela Cannon.
“I am very excited for our team,” said head coach Lela Cannon after the announcement. “We have had a fantastic season thus far and we look forward to doing well at regionals.”
Miami, ranked 41st in the nation by Golfweek, has posted three victories and recorded two runner-up finishes in nine tournaments this season.
Miami has been led by senior Tina Miller (Miami Archbishop Curley Notre Dame). Miller has recorded seven top-10s this season including three victories. She won the Ryder Florida Women’s Collegiate Golf Championship in April marking her seventh career win. Miller currently leads the team with a 74.07 stroke average.
Sophomore Josie Shinn (Pinehurst, N.C.) has also been impressive. Shinn transferred to UM this season from the University of North Carolina and ranks second on the team with a 75.81 stroke average. She has recorded four top-10 finishes this season including a win at the Papa John’s Collegiate in February.
A total of three regional tournaments will be conducted May 5-7 to determine the field for the NCAA Championship finals, May 17-20, at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon. The other two regional sites include the Central Regional in Lubbock, Texas and the West Regional Las Cruces, New Mexico. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each region.
East RegionalThe East regional will be played May 5-7 at the University of Florida Golf Course, Gainesville, Florida, hosted by the University of Florida.
