Camaredese And Paco Figueroa Pace Miami In 5-2 Win Against Florida State
April 23, 2005
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Starter Brandon Camardese and the Miami bullpen held Florida State to four hits and Paco Figueroa went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hurricanes (31-9-1 overall, 15-4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) to a 5-2 win against 17th-ranked Florida State (24-13, 9-8 ACC) in front of 4,717 at Mark Light Field Saturday night.
Camardese had arguably his best outing of the season, pitching six innings and giving up two runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts to improve his record to 5-0 this season. FSU’s Barrett Browning was charged with the loss and gave up four earned runs on five hits, four walks and five strikeouts in six-plus innings.
Paco Figueroa hit a solo home run, doubled and scored one run while aiding Miami’s defensive cause with seven putouts in right field, including diving grab in the sixth inning hit by Aaron Cheesman.
Shane Robinson paced the Seminoles with a pair of doubles.
Paco Figueroa put the first pitch he saw from Browning over the wall in left field for a 1-0 one-out lead in the first inning. The Seminoles tied it up in the top of third when Cheesman grounded out to first to score Shane Robinson from third base.
Browning loaded the bases in the third, giving up a single to Danny Figueroa and hitting Paco Figueroa and Ryan Braun on consecutive at-bats. Jon Jay grounded out to first to score Danny Figueroa and give UM a 2-1 lead.
UM freshman Alex Garabedian gave the Hurricanes a two-run cushion in the fourth with a RBI single to left that scored Walter Diaz from second.
FSU’s Daniel Wardell brought the Seminoles within 3-2 with a mammoth solo home run to left field in the sixth inning.
The Hurricanes built on their 3-2 lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Browning walked Eddy Rodriguez and Danny Figueroa to start inning before he was replaced by Michael Hyde. Hyde loaded the bases when Paco Figueroa feigned a bunt and swung away for an infield single. Kevin Lynch spelled Hyde and entered the game to face Braun in a no-out, bases-loaded situation. Braun hit grounder that glanced off Lynch’s glove and was fielded by second baseman Tony Thomas. Thomas stepped on second to force out Paco Figueroa, but his throw to first was errant, allowing Braun to reach base. Rodriguez scored on the fielder’s choice and Danny Figueroa advanced home on the throw for a 5-2 UM advantage.
The runs were plenty of insurance, given the performance of UM relievers Andrew Lane and Chris Perez.
Lane pitched perfect seventh and eighth innings, retiring all six batters he faced, including two by strikeout. Perez came on in the ninth to close out the game.
Miami and Florida State close out the series with a 1 p.m. tilt on Sunday at Mark Light Field.
