CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Fifth-ranked Miami scored five runs in the eighth inning to erase a three-run deficit and went on to defeat No. 17 Florida State, 5-3, in front of a sold out crowd of 5,200 at Mark Light Field Friday night.

It was a great comeback,” Miami head coach Jim Morris said. “Florida State had some great pitching and there was some really clutch hitting from our guys.”

The win brought improved the Hurricanes’ record to 30-9-1 overall and 14-4-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Florida State dropped to 34-12 overall and 9-7 in the ACC. UM starter Cesar Carrillo’s career record remained at 21-0 in a no-decision. Carrillo pitched six innings, gave up three runs, six hits, two walks and struck out six. Sophomore Danny Gil pitched a scoreless eighth inning to improve his record to 2-3 and Chris Perez picked up his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

FSU’s Tyler Chambliss (5-3) pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up two unearned runs on one hit in the loss. Seminole starter Mark Sauls pitched three and two-thirds innings and four hits with three walks.

Miami had trouble putting runs on the board until the eighth, stranding 10 runners in the previous seven innings. The UM eighth looked like it would turn out like the first seven innings when Alex Garabedian hit a one-out double-play ball with the bases loaded. FSU shortstop Ryan Jernigan fielded Garabedian’s high chopper on his way to second base and then threw to first to nab Garabedian.

The inning would have been over and Florida State would have maintained its’ 5-3 lead had it not been for freshman Walter Diaz’s mad dash to second on the play, which narrowly beat Jernigan’s tag. Diaz was ruled safe, Jon Jay scored on the play and the Hurricanes had runners at second and third with two outs and sophomore catcher Eddy Rodriguez coming to the plate.

Rodriguez delivered with a slap-single between first and second base that brought home Danny Valencia and Diaz to tie the game at 3-3. Danny Figueroa walked to put runners on first and second. Paco Figueroa hit a sharp grounder that was misplayed by Jernigan and slowly rolled into center field. Rodriguez and Danny Figueroa were able to score the go-ahead runs on the error for the 5-3 score.

Perez came on in the ninth and gave up a one-out walk and a hit before striking out Brant Peacher and forcing Jernigan to foul out to Rodriguez.

FSU built itself a 3-0 lead in the third. Ryne Malone doubled off the left field wall to drive in Shane Robinson with no outs 1-0 lead. Gibbs Chapman reached base on an error to push Malone to third and Aaron Cheesman walked to load the bases. Jack Rye hit an infield single to first to score Malone and keep the bases loaded. Daniel Wardell hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Chapman for a 3-0 cushion.
