CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The second-seeded University of Miami’s women’s tennis team received a first-round bye into the quarterfinals of the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship that will be held April 21-24 at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C., it was announced Monday.
Miami, ranked ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, will face the winner of Thursday’s match against seventh seeded Duke (14-9, 5-5 ACC) and 10th seeded NC State (9-13, 1-9 ACC).
The Hurricanes are seeded second behind eighth ranked Georgia Tech. Both teams shared a piece of the ACC regular season title after finishing with 9-1 marks, respectively. Miami posted an 18-3 overall record with their only ACC loss coming against the Yellow Jackets on April 4th.
Clemson claimed the tournament’s third seed, followed by North Carolina, Maryland, Wake Forest, Duke, Florida State, Virginia, NC State and Virginia Tech.
“I think that Georgia Tech definitely deserves the top seed considering that they beat us head to head,” said head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “You’re going to have to beat the best teams to win the tournament and that’s our goal.”
“It’s going to be good for the girls to start off with a tough match. Second round we could potentially be looking at a Clemson or UNC or Georgia Tech at the finals. There are probably three teams in the tournament that could win it and I think that we are one of them.”
“The girls have to be ready to play three days of tough tennis back-to-back. If they do that, we’ll have a shot at bringing home the title,” concluded Yaroshuk-Tews.
The Hurricanes have faced Duke twice this season. The Blue Devils dealt the Hurricanes a 4-3 defeat in their first meeting during the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in January, while Miami won the last meeting 4-3 in Durham, N. C. on April 2nd. Duke holds a 4-8 edge all-time against the Hurricanes.
Miami blanked NC State, 7-0, in their only meeting this season on March 27th. The Hurricanes are unbeaten in three matches all-time against the Wolf Pack.
Senior Megan Bradley, the nation’s No. 1 ranked player, is on a 34-match win streak that dates to the fall season. The Columbia, Mo. native has posted a 20-0 record in dual-match play, while her 39-1 overall mark is the school record for most wins in a season.
Bradley pairs up with sophomore Audrey Banada to become the country’s No. 5 ranked doubles tandem. The pair finished the regular season with a 25-2 overall mark. In singles Banada is enjoying a 14-match win streak that has improved her record to 16-2 in dual action.
Freshman Patricia Starzyk, ranked No. 107, has lost only one match this season after to post a 20-1 record since joining the Hurricanes in January.
