Barrett, Greggs Lead Miami At Gatorade Invitational

Senior Kim Barrett (Miami Gulliver Prep) won the shot put with an NCAA leading throw of 18.19 meters (59-08.25), and junior All-American Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) won the 400-meters and was the top collegiate finisher in the 200-meters to lead the seventh-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team at the Miami Gatorade Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla.

Barrett, the 2005 NCAA Indoor Champion, has won all three meets this outdoor season, and eight of nine shot put competitions including the indoor season. Her throw established a new school, stadium and meet record.

In addition, Barrett was the top collegiate finisher in the hammer throw recording a school-record and NCAA regional qualifying mark of 58.85 meters (193-01).

Greggs, a six-time All-American, led a 1-2-3 Hurricane sweep of the 400-meters posting a time of 52.71 seconds, the second fastest time by an American this year. Senior Wiande Moore (Spring, Texas) placed second with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 53.68 seconds, while sophomore All-American Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) also recorded an NCAA regional qualifying time finishing third with a time of 54.42 seconds.

Later in the evening Greggs finished second in the 200-meters posting the second fastest time by a collegian this season (22.76). Greggs was the top collegiate finisher placing behind former Hurricane and Olympic 100-meter silver medalist Lauryn Williams who won the race with a world leading time of 22.53 seconds.

The Hurricanes’ 4×100-meter relay of senior All-American Chinela Davis (Haverstraw, N.Y), Moore, junior All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) and junior All-American India Ransom (Largo, Md.) was impressive on Saturday finishing second with a time of 43.76 seconds marking the third fastest by a collegiate team this season.

Miami’s jumpers were also impressive. Sophomore All-American Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas) led a UM sweep of the long jump posting an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 6.13 meters (20-01.50). All-American Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) placed second with an NCAA regional mark of 6.10 meters (20.00.25) while senior All-American Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.) finished third with an NCAA regional mark of 6.08 meters (19-11.50).

Charles later dominated the triple jump easily winning with a mark of 13.39 meters (43-11.25). Charles’ winning jump is the fourth best by a collegian this season and defeated her next closest competitor by nearly two feet.

The Hurricanes recorded a total of 16 NCAA regional qualifying marks on the night including Ransom in the 100-meters (11.58), Darden in the 100-meter hurdles (13.40), Amber Williams in the 100-meters hurdles (13.90), senior Adrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) in the shot put (15.86 meters), and freshman Khadija Talley (Benning, Ga.) who set a UM record in the discus (48.44 meters).
