Hurricanes Top Maryland, 6-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Miami men’s tennis squad claimed their first Atlantic Coast Conference victory with a 6-1 win over Maryland at the Tennis Center at College Park Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 10-8 on the season and 1-6 in the ACC, while the Terrapins fall to 8-8 overall and 0-7 in league play.
The Hurricanes took a 1-0 match lead when they won two out of the three doubles matches to claim they doubles point. Sophomore Josh Cohen and junior Eric Hechtman paired up to defeat the Terps’ Michael Coleman/Josh Brauser pair, 8-3, at the No. 2 slot before senior Luis Manrique and freshman Ryan Waits downed Scott Fink and David Reichsfeld, 8-5, at the No. 3 position to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, the Hurricanes took five-of-six singles matches to win the match, 6-1.
Cohen took a 6-4, 6-1 straight set victory over Ian Bliss at the No. 1 singles position as junior Tim Krebs, ranked 67th, battled back from a 6-3 first set loss to defeat Troy Demers in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) at the No. 2 slot. Hechtman also won in straight sets, upending Fink 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.
Junior John Hoyes lost only two games in his 6-2, 6-0 victory over Reichsfeld at the No. 4 position, while freshman Vivek Subramanian downed Brauser 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 slot.
The Hurricanes return to action Friday, April 8th when they host ACC foe North Carolina State at 6:00 p.m. in the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
