Hurricanes Handle Wake Forest in 6-1 Victory

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The 11th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team continued their winning ways with a 6-1 victory over No. 31 Wake Forest in Atlantic Coast Conference action Sunday afternoon at the Leighton Tennis Stadium in Winston-Salem.
With the win, UM’s 15th straight, the Hurricanes improve to 17-2 overall and 8-0 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons drop to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in league play.
The Hurricanes jumped out to an early match lead, winning the doubles point after claiming two of the three doubles matches. Junior Melissa Applebaum and sophomore Audrey Banada joined to defeat Karin Coetzee and Alex Hirsch, 8-2, at the No. 1 slot while Miami’s senior tandem of Megan Bradley and Staci Stevens topped Wake Forest’s Katie Martzolf/Ashlee Davis pair 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Banada got things started in singles, claiming a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory over Jenna Loeb at the No. 5 position to win her 12th-straight match.
No. 1 Bradley topped No. 66 Davis in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-1 at the No.1 position to remain undefeated in 18 matches this spring.
Applebaum, playing at the No. 3 slot, clinched the win for the Hurricanes when she upended Hirsch 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomore Emily Mowery, ranked No. 69, topped Danielle Schwartz 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 position before freshman Patricia Starzyk, ranked 92nd, upended Martzolf 5-7, 6-3 (10-2) at No. 4 singles to close the match.
The Hurricanes return to action when they travel north to South Carolina for a match against No. 15 Clemson Saturday, April 9th at 10:30 a.m.
