University of Miami senior Tina Miller (Miami Archbishop Curley Notre Dame) fired a two-under-par round of 70 to take a one-stroke lead after round one of the Ryder Florida Women’s Collegiate Golf Championships at Don Shula’s Hotel and Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla.
Miller’s score helped the Hurricanes take the first round lead posting a team total of 294. Miami, which has already recorded two team victories this spring, is three strokes ahead of South Florida (297) and five strokes ahead of Florida State (299). The Hurricanes have won the state title a total of eight times with the last coming in 1993.
Miller, who has won two individual titles this season including a win at the Waterlefe Invitational two weeks ago, is attempting to win her first state championship. She currently leads by one stroke over South Florida’s Christina Jones (71) and has a two stroke advantage over a trio of players including teammate Josie Shinn (Pinehurst, N.C.) who posted an opening round 72 on Friday.
Second round action will begin Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Admission is free.
