Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – For the 21st consecutive year and the 22nd in the 35-year history of the tournament, the University of Miami will host the RYDER/Florida Women’s Collegiate Golf Championship, April 1-3, at Don Shula’s Hotel and Golf Club in Miami Lakes, FL.
Competition will begin with at 8:00 a.m. on all three days. Players will go off the first and 10th tees on Friday and Saturday. Sunday will be a shotgun start. Admission is free.
The tournament features the best women’s collegiate golf in Florida, as 14 schools from the state come together for three rounds to determine the state champion.
This season’s championship will feature four teams ranked among the top-100 teams in the nation including No. 42 Miami, No. 54 South Florida, No. 73 Florida State and No. 96 Florida International.
Also competing this weekend will be Rollins College, the two-time defending NCAA Division II National Champion. Rollins won last season state title marking its first win at the event since 1973.
Rounding out the field are Barry, Bethune-Cookman, Florida Atlantic, Florida Southern, Jacksonville, Lynn, Nova Southeastern, Stetson and UCF.
Miami, which has won the state title eight times, is off to a strong start this spring winning two of the first three spring tournaments. The Hurricanes have been led this season by senior Tina Miller (Miami Archbishop Curley Notre Dame). Miller has won two tournaments this season and recorded three other top-10 finishes in seven starts. She is currently ranked 34th in the nation and leads the team with a 73.9 stroke average. Last week she was honored as Golf World’s National College Player of the Week.
Another player to watch is Rollins junior Charlotte Campbell, last year’s individual champion, who will attempt to become the first player since Florida’s Riko Higashio in 1996 and 1997 to repeat as state champion. Campbell is the two-time defending NCAA Division II National Champion.
