Miami Loses To Georgia Tech, 17-7

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami gave up 12 runs in the final five innings in a 17-7 loss to Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon at Mark Light Field. The seventh-ranked Hurricanes dropped to 22-6 overall and 8-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the no. 8 Yellow Jackets improved to 20-4 and 10-1 in the ACC.
UM sophomore pitcher Ricky Orta (5-2) was charged with his first loss as a starter and gave up seven runs on 10 hits with four walks and six strikeouts in four and one-third innings. Tech reliever Tim Gustafson pitched three and two-thirds innings and gave up one run on three hits to improve his record to 3-1 this season.
Ryan Braun, Brendan Katin and Eddy Rodriguez all homered for the Hurricanes. Rodriguez led UM at the plate, going 3 for 3 with three RBIs and collected his fourth home run in five games. Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters led a 22-hit Yellow Jacket attack with five hits, including a grand slam in the eighth inning. Tyler Greene and Wes Hodges both collected four hits.
Miami trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the fourth. Katin led off the inning with his fourth home run of the year to left field. Rodriguez punched his fourth four-bagger of the year over the left field wall one batter later to bring the Hurricanes within 5-4. Paco Figueroa tied the game with a one-out double to score his brother, Danny Figueroa.
Georgia Tech broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning and ended all hope of a Miami comeback with a six-run eighth inning for a 16-7 lead.
The Hurricanes and Yellow Jackets conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. tilt on Sunday at Mark Light Field.
