Women's Volleyball Announces Spring Schedule

March 25, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s volleyball team announced the 2005 spring schedule Friday before their trip to Tampa, Fla. for the South Florida Spring Tournament that will take place all-day on Saturday.

The Hurricanes, who began team practice on Feb. 23rd, played in a scrimmage on Friday, Mar. 11th against Miami-Dade College at the Knight Sports Complex.

After the South Florida Spring Tournament, the Hurricanes will host a tournament of their own April 9th. The Hurricane Spring Tournament will feature Florida A&M, who finished ranked 25th in the final USA TODAY/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll; Barry, who won the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship; as well as, Florida International and Florida Atlantic.

The Hurricanes will conclude the spring season with a match against Penn State, who finished ranked seventh in the final poll, on April 15th.

“Spring is a great time to make big strides as a team,” said head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “We take a look at different options and see how players respond to being in those positions.”

“The players will see significant playing time. Ashley Woods will compete for the first time. The spring proved to be a big time help for Ciara [Michel] who was in her shoes last spring,” concluded Lantagne Welch.

The Hurricanes return eight letterwinners, including four starters, from the 2004 squad that finished second in their inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 11-5 record and a 17-9 overall mark.
