The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team extended their home winning streak to 24 matches with a 7-0 win over No. 61 Maryland in Atlantic Coast Conference action Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 13-2 and 5-0 in ACC play while the Terrapins fall to 7-6, 1-2 ACC.  <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

Miami has now posted nine 7-0 sweeps this season, with eight of them coming at home.

 

Miami’s doubles duo of junior Melissa Applebaum and senior Staci Stevens claimed a convincing 8-0 victory over Maryland’s Jennifer Dent/Julia Graca pair at the No. 2 position to open doubles action. UM’s fourth ranked tandem of senior Megan Bradley and freshman Audrey Banada then topped Maryland’s 16th ranked duo of Ramona But and Marianne Baker 8-3 at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point.

 

With the score eight-all, Miami’s freshman twosome of Patricia Starzyk and Juliette Mavroleon defeated Tamar Huppes and Neda Mihneva 10-8 in the tiebreaker at the No. 3 slot to complete the doubles sweep.

 

Bradley got the Hurricanes started in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory over But, ranked 68th, at the No. 1 position. The nation’s No. 1 ranked player has won 28-straight matches for an impressive 33-1 overall record.

 

Applebaum and Stevens also posted straight set victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, respectively. Applebaum topped Baker 6-3, 6-1 before Stevens defeated Dent 6-3, 7-6.

 

At the No. 4 position, Starzyk upended Veronika Subertova 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 to remain unbeaten in 15 matches this spring.

 

Sophomore Emily Mowery downed Huppes 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 6 slot before Banada defeated Mihneva 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5 in the final match of the afternoon.

 

The Hurricanes return to action Friday, March 25th when they host in-state rival South Florida for senior night where they will honor seniors Megan Bradley and Staci Stevens. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.  Admission is FREE for students and the general public.
