10th Ranked Hurricanes Cruise to 7-0 Win Over Virginia

The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over visiting Virginia in Atlantic Coast Conference action Friday evening at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Hurricanes, who have won ten straight matches, improve to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in ACC play. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

The Hurricanes got off to a good start taking two of the three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Miami’s fourth ranked tandem of Megan Bradley and Audrey Banada topped UVa’s duo of Lori Stern and Kristen James, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles before freshmen Patricia Starzyk and Juliette Mavroleon, playing in only their second match together, upended Caroline Hammond and Marta Bechliwanis, 8-4, at the No. 3 slot.

 

Bradley, the country’s No. 1 player, lost only one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over James at No. 1 singles for her 27th-straight win.

 

Applebaum gave Miami a three point match lead after taking a 6-1, 6-4 straight set win over Rachel DelPriore at the No. 3 position.

 

Starzyk clinched the win for the Hurricanes after defeating Dora Bechliwanis 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 slot.

 

Banada won her eighth singles match in a row with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Lindsey Pereira before sophomore Emily Mowery upended M. Bechliwanis 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot.

 

In the final match of the night, senior Staci Stevens rallied from a second set loss to claim a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Stern at No. 2 singles.

 

 The Hurricanes return to action at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center Sunday at Noon with an ACC match against No. 61 Maryland. Admission is FREE for students and the general public.
