The 10th ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team claimed a 5-2 victory over ninth ranked North Carolina in Atlantic Coast Conference action Wednesday evening at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter. With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 11-2 overall and hold a 3-0 mark in ACC play. The Tar Heels fell to 12-5, 1-1 ACC.

The Hurricanes opened their first conference match-up with the Tar Heels by claiming the crucial doubles point. Miami’s fourth ranked tandem of Megan Bradley and Audrey Banada defeated UNC’s 11th ranked duo of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis, 8-3 at the No. 1 slot to begin doubles action. With Hurricanes falling at No. 2 doubles, the point was in the hands of freshmen Juliette Mavroleon and Patricia Starzyk at No. 3. The freshmen, who were playing in their first match together, pulled through with an 8-5 victory over Alexandra Jurewitz and Tanja Markovic.

 

No. 1 ranked Bradley gave the Hurricanes a 2-0 match-lead with a 6-2, 6-1 straight set win over No. 32 Mojzis at No. 1 singles.

 

Banada, playing at the No. 6 position, was the next to finish with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jurewitz for her seventh-straight singles win.

 

SophomoreEmily Mowery, ranked 70th in the nation, clinched the win for the Hurricanes with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Charlotte Tansill at the No. 5 spot.

 

The final match of the night saw Starzyk battle to remain unbeaten in singles play. After falling in the first set, Starzyk won the second set and took the third set tie-breaker to upend Caitlin Collins 4-6, 6-4 (10-8) at the No. 4 slot to extend her singles win streak to 13 matches.

 

The Hurricanes are now 11-1 all-time against the Tar Heels and extend their home win streak to 22 matches.

 

The Hurricanes continue with their homestand when they host No. 64 Virginia in ACC action Friday, March 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the NeilSchiffTennisCenter.
