Velazquez Wins Three-Meter Title at ACC Championships

ATLANTA, Ga. –
<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Miami diver Miguel Velazquez won his second gold medal in as many days when he tallied a final score of 613.00 to claim top-honors on the three-meter diving board at the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center Friday evening. Velazquez won gold on the one-meter diving board Thursday night.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Miami’s Derek Starks finished third in the event with 576.50 points while Florida State’s Alez Tilbrook placed second with 580.20 points.
The Hurricanes, who only field a diving squad, remain in 10th place with 73 points while Virginia maintains a significant lead with 502.5 total points after 14 events. Florida State (383) is second and North Carolina (300.5) third followed by Georgia Tech (300), Clemson (248.5), Virginia Tech (227.5), NC State (220), Maryland (172) and Duke (103).
The Hurricanes return for the fourth and final day of competition Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for the preliminary round of the 10-meter platform. Finals will commence at 7:00 p.m.
