Knapp Sets School Record in 100 Backstroke at ACC Championships

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Miami sophomore Ashley Knapp set a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke on the third day of competition at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center Friday.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

Knapp broke teammate Katalin Ferenczi’s record of 57.26 set in 2003 with a 57.23 performance in Friday morning’s preliminaries. Knapp finished in 11th place after swimming in the `B’-Final in the evening session.

 

Ferenczi also reached the `B’-Final in the 100 back after swimming a season-best time of 57.54 in the preliminaries. In finals, Ferenczi finished 13th after touching the wall at 57.58.

 

Freshman diver Jenna Dreyer, who won the one-meter board Thursday evening, took home a silver medal in the three-meter board with a score of 550.65. Florida State’s Brittany Lerew won the title with a score of 556.60. Sophomore Heather Bounds finished in fourth after earning a score of 503.85.

 

In the 400-yard individual medley, sophomore Kristen Lunak took part in the `C’-Final, coming in 24th with a time of 4:44.70. She turned in a time of 4:41.17 in the prelims. Senior Lindsay Knapp clocked in a season-best time of 4:35.29 in the prelims. Knapp also set a season-best time of 58.81 in the 100-yard backstroke to earn a spot in the evening’s `C’-Final where she finished 22nd.

 

Sophomore Nancy Gajos returned for the evening session for the second night after touching the wall with a season-best time of 56.55 in the 100-butterfly prelims. Gajos finished 16th with a time of 57.01 in the evening’s `B’-Final.

 

Also recording season-best times in the 100 butterfly was freshmen Emerson Davis, who broke the one minute barrier with a time of 59.50, and Capria DeVenuto, who touched the wall with a time of 1:00.05.

 

Freshman Taylor McFarlane also returned to the evening session when she set a season-best mark, and the Hurricanes’ fastest time, in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.91 during prelims. McFarlane clocked in 1:52.52 to finish 15th in the `B’-Final.

 

Classmate Lauren Shue also clocked in a season-best time in the 200 freestyle touching the wall at 1:53.33, earning a trip to the `C’-Final where she finished 23rd (1:53.69).

 

Senior Mary Carriere set a season-best mark of 2:05.36 in the morning’s 200 freestyle prelims.

 

Freshman Amy Caron was the only Hurricane to return to the evening session in the 100-yard breastroke. There, Caron turned in a season-best mark, and Miami’s second fastest time of the season, when she touched the wall in 23rd place with a time of 1:07.74.

 

The Hurricanes are currently in 10th place with 135 total points. Maryland maintains its’ lead after scoring 469 points after three days of competition, leading Virginia (391), North Carolina (336.5), Florida State (313), Virginia Tech (242.5), Georgia Tech (209.5), Clemson (160), Duke (142) and NC State (141.5).

 

The final day of the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship will feature the following events:  200-backstroke, 100-freestyle, 200-breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650-yard freestyle, platform diving and the 400-yard freestyle relay.  Preliminaries will commence at 11:00 a.m.
