Diver Jenna Dreyer Wins the ACC One-Meter Title

ATLANTA, Ga. – University of Miami diver Jenna Dreyer became the Hurricanes’ first ACC medalist, when she took top honors on the one-meter diving board in the second day of competition at the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center Thursday evening. The Miami freshman set a new ACC Championship record with a score of 320.75.
Dreyer came into Thursday evening’s final as the No. 1 seed after finishing the afternoon’s diving preliminaries with a score of 315.50. The Port Elizabeth, South Africa native led the ACC in both the one-meter and three-meter diving boards throughout the season.
Senior Katalin Ferenczi was one of only two individual swimmers to return for the evening session after finishing 10th in the morning’s preliminaries. In prelims, Ferenczi touched the wall with a career best time of 2:04.97 in the 200-IM, missing the NCAA Standard `B’ mark by just under seven-tenths of a second. Only five one-hundredths of a second separated Ferenczi from the 6th place finisher. In the evening session the Pa’Pa, Hungary native finished in 13th place after turning in a time of 2:05.20–her second-fastest time of the season.
Sophomore Nancy Gajos was the only other swimmer to return in the evening where she set a career-best mark of 2:07.84 in the 200-IM, besting her career-best time of 2:08.38 that she set in the preliminaries. Gajos finished in 23rd place.
The Hurricanes’ 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Emerson Davis, Ferenczi, sophomore Ashley Knapp and freshman Taylor McFarlane finished in ninth place with a season-best time of 1:37.43. Davis broke her career mark, which she set in the preliminaries of the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 24.63 as the lead of leg.
All in all, eleven Hurricane swimmers finished with season-best performances in the preliminaries. Freshman Lauren Shue turned in the season’s second fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle when she touched the wall with a time of 5:00.33, finishing in 31st place after all the heats were completed. Sophomore Tara Erwin followed suit in 37th place with a season-best time of 5:02.37, improving her previous season best by over six seconds.
Also turning in season-best times in the 500-yard freestyle were freshmen Capria DeVenuto and Kelly Withum and senior Mary Carriere. DeVenuto finished with a time of 5:11.91 for 45th followed by Withum in 48th place with a time of 5:25.25. Carriere came in at 5:28.18 for 49th place.
Four other swimmers represented the Hurricanes in the 200-yard IM with three of them also turning in season-best times. Freshman Casey Heffernan out-touched classmate Amy Caron for 32nd place with a time of 2:12.37 while Caron finished 33rd place with a time of 2:12.54. Sophomore Kristen Lunak came in 35th place with a career-best time of 2:15.39 while senior Colleen Adkins touched in 37th place with a time of 2:16.24.
Davis was the Hurricanes’ top finisher at 45th in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries, coming in at 24.70 while Knapp touched with a time of 25.14 for 56th place. Freshman Melissa Froelich finished in 60th place with a time of 25.59.
Sophomore Heather Bounds finished in 15th place with a score of 218.95 in the preliminaries of the one-meter diving board.
The Hurricanes closed the second day of competition in a tie with NC State for eighth place with 90 points each. Maryland finished in first place with a total of 238 points. Virginia remained in second place with 217 points, while North Carolina tallied 156 points to place third. Florida State stands in fourth place (140), Virginia Tech in fifth (125.5), Clemson in sixth (110) and Georgia Tech in seventh (100.5). Duke finished in tenth place with 89 points.
The ACC Championship meet will continue Friday with prelims at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m. The schedule of events for the third day of competition consists of the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, three-meter diving and the 400-yard medley relay.
