Hurricanes Set for Inaugural Swimming and Diving ACC Championship

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming and diving team is set to take part in their inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference Championship which is slated to begin Wednesday, Feb. 16th and last through Saturday, Feb. 19th at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
The Hurricanes closed out the regular season with a 7-7 overall record while posting an 0-3 mark in the ACC. The 2004-05 season, saw the emergence of Miami’s next wave of talented swimmers and divers with eight of the Hurricanes’ top performances coming from sophomores and freshmen.
Senior and school record-holder Katalin Ferenczi leads the Hurricanes after turning in the seasons’ best performances in the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard breastroke and 200 and 400-yard individual medley. Ferenczi is seeded 11th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.31 and 16th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.08.
Sophomore Ashley Knapp is seeded 11th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.89 while freshman Taylor McFarlane is seeded 17th with a time of 58.09. Also seeded in the Top-20 are freshman Lauren Shue and sophomore Nancy Gajos. Shue is seeded 16th in the 1650-yard freestyle, while Gajos is 14th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.39.
Last season, Virginia walked away with its’ fifth conference title with 675 points. North Carolina was the runner-up, finishing second with 623.5 points followed by Florida State in third with 611, by Maryland with 506, Clemson, a four-time champion, with 294.5, Georgia Tech with 282, Duke with 262 and NC State, winner of two championships, with 229.

The meet will begin Wednesday, Feb. 16th at 7:00 p.m. with the 800-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays. Competition will recommence Thursday with preliminaries at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m. Prelims and finals will begin at the same time until the conclusion of the meet Saturday, Feb. 19th.
