Feb. 8, 2005
Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team has been ranked 10th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll that was released Tuesday, marking the highest team ranking since the 1989 season.
“This is what I have been trying to achieve with the program since I started coaching at the University of Miami,” said head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “It’s simply a result of hard work and discipline from our kids.”
The Hurricanes (2-2), who were ranked 12th in the first two polls of the season, move up in the rankings after finishing 1-2 at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships that were held Feb. 3-6th. There, the Hurricanes upset then No. 4 UCLA, 4-3, to reach the quarterfinal round.
Three other schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference remain ranked in the Top 15. Duke is ranked highest at No. 6, followed by Clemson at No.7 and rounded out by North Carolina at No. 14.
The next ITA team poll will be released Feb. 15th. The ITA will release the next singles/doubles poll Feb. 22nd.
The Hurricanes return to action Tuesday, Feb. 15th when they host cross-town rival and 63rd ranked Florida International at 6:00 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
