CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The second ranked University of Miami Hurricanes won 14-0 in the pre-season game against the Hurricane Alumni team in front of 1,518 fans Saturday night at Mark Light Field.
The Hurricanes were led by center fielder Danny Figueroa who went 3 for 4 at the plate with 5 RBIs.
The Hurricanes broke the game open in fifth inning scoring five runs on four hits off of former pitcher Laz Gutierrez. First baseman Danny Valencia singled to right field scoring Jon Jay who lead off the inning with a walk and Brendan Katin who reached base on a single to shortstop. A two-run homerun over the left-field fence by Danny Figueroa extended the Hurricanes lead 11-0 scoring Alex Garabedian who reached base on a fielder’s choice.
After the game, Hurricanes Head Coach Jim Morris commented, “This is a great game for us. It is great to play against all the former players who return. These guys we play against are not just alumni but very good players. The game will help us prepare for our opener against FIU Tuesday. I was pleased with the way we played. We played solid defense and got some key two-out hits.”
The Hurricanes open the 2005 season this Tuesday night against FloridaInternationalUniversity at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field.
