Hurricanes Top Pennsylvania, 7-0, in Season Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 12 ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over No. 53 Pennsylvania in their season opener Saturday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes (1-0), who were forced to postpone Friday’s match against Florida Atlantic due to inclement weather, improve to 2-0 all-time versus the Quakers.
Senior (2) Megan Bradley, playing in the No. 1 singles spot, defeated (83) Julia Koulbitskaya 6-1, 6-2.
Fellow senior Staci Stevens outlasted Yulia Rivelis in three sets 7-6 (7), 1-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
Junior Melissa Applebaum, playing in the No. 3 position, defeated Shelah Chao in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, as did sophomore Audrey Banada and freshman Juliette Mavroleon. Banada downed Raluca Ciochina 6-0, 7-5 at No. 5 while Mavroleon defeated Caroline Stanislawski 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 6 position.
Freshman Patricia Starzyk, who joined the Hurricanes in January, won her collegiate debut defeating Michelle Mitchell in three sets 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.
The 8th ranked tandem of Bradley and Banada upended Penn’s Koulbitskaya/Mitchell duo 8-2 in the No. 1 slot and the Hurricanes’ No. 3 team of Stevens and Starzyk defeated Ciochina/Stanislawski 8-5 to take the doubles point.
The Hurricanes return to action when they travel to Madison, Wis. for the USTA/ITA Women’s National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 3-6.
