Hurricanes Defeat Tampa; Fall to FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Four Hurricanes set season-best marks to pace Miami to a 146-145 victory over the University of Tampa and a 159-141 loss to Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon in a double-dual meet at the FAU pool.

Freshman Lauren Shue placed first in both the 1000-yard and 500-yard freestyle events setting a season-best time of 10:14.16 in the 1000-free. The Fort Meyers, Fla. native also set a season-best mark in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.76 that placed her third in the event.

Freshman Taylor McFarlane and senior Katalin Ferenczi also set season best times in the meet. McFarlane clocked in at 5:02.99 in the 500-yard freestyle to take third place and set a new season mark. She also finished second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.48) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.66). Ferenczi was less than a second off her school record time of 57.26 in the 100-yard backstroke. She won the event with a time of 57.78 for the team’s best performance of the season. Ferenczi also placed second in her first 200-yard breaststroke race of the season with a time of (2:24.38).

The Hurricanes’ diving squad swept the 3-meter and 1-meter boards in both the men’s and women’s competition. In an exhibition performance, senior Miguel Velazquez and sophomore Derek Starks placed first and second on both boards. Miami went 1-2-3 on the 1-meter board with sophomore Toby Brooks taking third.

Freshman Jenna Dreyer placed first in the 1-meter with a season-best mark of 335.02 and in the 3-meter with a score of 287.90; both are NCAA Zone Qualifying scores. Her mark of 335.02 in the 1-meter Sophomore Heather Bounds placed second on both boards with scores of 239.80 on the 1-meter and 243.67 on the 3-meter.

The Hurricanes return to action when they travel to Houston, Texas February 5th for a double-dual meet against the University of Houston and Texas A&M.
