Hurricanes Compete at U.S. Open

San Antonio, Texas – Sophomore Nancy Gajos narrowly missed the 100-meter butterfly finals in the 2004 U.S. Open Swimming Championships at the Palo Alto College Natatorium Friday afternoon. Freshman Taylor McFarlane was the only other Miami swimmer to race on the second day of competition.
In the morning’s preliminary heat, Gajos tied with three other swimmers after touching the wall at 1:04.63. In the swim off to decide who would take the last spot in the evening’s final, Gajos came in .30 seconds behind the winner Agy Ana. Gajos bested her previous performance with a time of 1:04.46.
McFarlane clocked in at 1:08.25 in the 100-meter backstroke event in the preliminary heat.
Gajos will take to the pool once again Saturday morning for the prelims of the 200-meter butterfly where she will be joined by classmate Andre Hughes. Also set to swim is senior Manon van Rooijen, in the 100-meter freestyle, as well as, freshman Lauren Shue and sophomore Tara Erwin in the 800-meter freestyle.
Prelims will begin at 9:30 a.m. and finals will commence at 6:00 p.m.
